Welcome Message by the Deputy Dean Research

Prof Tiaan de JagerThe University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Health Sciences is committed to increasing its research contribution to society, building on its unique identity, strengths and relevance within the University’s vision of being a leading research-intensive university in Africa, recognised internationally for its quality, relevance and impact, and also for developing people, creating knowledge and making a difference locally and globally.

The Faculty of Health Sciences is the proud host of two South African Medical Research Council Units on Inflammation and on Mother and Child Health, an Institute for Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Centres for Sustainable Malaria Control, Forensic Anthropology, Applied Morphology and Comprehensive Physical Rehabilitation, a Zoonotic Research Group and a Clinical Trials Unit. A SARChI Research Chair on Sustainable Malaria Control was recently awarded by the National Research Foundation.

The Faculty of Health Sciences is also a partner in three University Institutional Research Themes in Food, Nutrition and Well-being; the Management of Animal and Zoonotic Diseases; and in Genomics. These are complemented by the Faculty Research Themes on Sustainable Malaria Control; Cellular and Molecular Medicine; and a range of other research interest groups, reflecting a diversity of research that contributes to health knowledge and interventions in South Africa, Africa and globally, from stem cells to community health promotion.

Our research is supported by a range of expert laboratories and has achieved a number of global discoveries.  The Faculty has more than 20 NRF-rated scientists, while the high number of scientific papers in ISI journals is proof of good-quality research from the Faculty. The hallmark of our research remains its focus on health and health-care challenges facing South Africa and Africa, from laboratory based cutting edge science to finding solutions to health-care burdens.
